Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between homeschool and public school at home?

A: Public school at home: Also known as virtual school, your children are under your care but are under the instruction of trained professionals. They apply a district-wide or statewide curriculum over which you have almost no influence. Instruction may be in online groups, but your child is at home with limited in-person exposure to other students. Students may have flexibility to complete their work outside regular school hours.
Homeschooling: This encompasses many variations, including traditional homeschooling, classical education, Charlotte Mason, unit studies and other types. However, most share the common characteristic of parent-taught education using a curriculum of the parent’s choosing. The class size is the number of school-age children in the household. Parents determine the school schedule.

Q: Do I have to be a member of Pamlico Christian Homeschool Group to attend the Friday classes?

A: Yes. All students who attend classes must be approved Pamlico Christian Homeschool Group members.

Q: What are the fees associated with Pamlico Christian Homeschool Group?

A: Currently (2024-2025) the annual fee to join Pamlico Christian Homeschool Group is $40 per family. This is applied to help maintain our website and purchase supplies like markers, pencils, glue, etc. In addition, some classes may have a small additional fee for participation.

Q: When and where are group classes held?
A: The group will meet every FRIDAY from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm at Broad Creek Church
45 Olympia Rd, New Bern, NC 28560.

Q: What type of courses does Pamlico Christian Homeschool Group offer?

A: Since this is a Co-Operative and most classes are taught by parents, the class offerings depend upon what parents choose to teach. However, we try to offer a balance between academic and elective, active and crafty, etc. Take a look at the current class schedule to see the course offerings for the present term.

Q: Do students in Pamlico Christian Homeschool Group have an opportunity for presentations?

A: Yes. Students will have opportunities in their individual group classes for presentations (depending on the class). There is also an annual Talent Show-Presentation to give students time to showcase their projects and what they have learned throughout the year.

Q: Is there a time we could observe a class to get a feel for how the group works?

A: Visitors are more than welcome to come and observe a Friday class. If you plan to visit, please let the leadership team know. [email protected]

Q: What is expected of a first-year parent as far as involvement in group classes?

A: We encourage new members to refrain from teaching the first semester of participation. We do not require group members to commit to teaching a class. Since we function as a cooperative effort it is crucial to the ministry that each family is motivated to serve in the group. We do require all attending parents to serve in some capacity.

Q: Do I have to attend field trips, park days, and other events?

A: No, attendance is not required but is a wonderful source of fellowship, encouragement, and friendship and is highly recommended.

Q: Can I drop my child off and pick him or her up when it is finished?

A: No. Drop-offs are not allowed due to the cooperative effort needed to make the group function successfully.

Q: How does Pamlico Christian Homeschool Group class registration work?

A: All course registration is done on our website. To register you will click on the courses under “Class Registration.” There you will see who is teaching as well as a class description including all commitments required and any class fees for that class. After that, you simply click on the child that you want to attend that class and your child will be registered.
